Asbestos Abatement Process Explained

Asbestos Abatement Process

A few decades ago, asbestos was found in almost every building material. It was stronger than steel, fire-resistant, and did not decompose, degrade or dissolve in water. However, in the last couple of decades, asbestos has been linked to a variety of fatal diseases, like asbestosis, mesothelioma, and even lung cancer. It has not been used since then for construction in Canada, but if your building is 30 years old, it likely has asbestos. If that is the case, consider Nationwide Restorations’ asbestos abatement treatment. Here’s what the treatment looks like.

Pre-Abatement

Before the asbestos abatement treatment begins, our project managers visit your premises for a thorough inspection and look for the presence of asbestos in every nook and corner of the structure. The project managers walk through the premise and figure out the apt path for waste removal, and mark containment and decontainment zones. At the end of the inspection, they will complete a detailed breakdown of costing and present you with an estimate.

Written Contract

Inspection is followed by handing you a written contract outlining the abatement plan and procedure. The said contract also includes the decontainment and removal procedures to be used. It also highlights any provincial or national regulations that need to be met. This helps you get familiar with the plan, so you know exactly what we will do.

Demarcation

Once you approve the plan, our technicians and experts arrive at the site on the pre-agreed upon time and start demarcating the structure. We mark the hazardous areas, set up containment and decontainment zones, and the waste removal path is also laid out. Any other equipment that is needed for the job is also set up. This process must be done correctly to avoid any slip-ups during the treatment.

Asbestos Removal

Once the structure is ready for decontamination, our technicians start the process of removing asbestos. We use specialized equipment to remove asbestos-containing materials. The removed materials are double-bagged in asbestos disposal waste bags, sealed, and carried to the designated trailer or dumpster lined with protective poly lining. Strick measures are taken to avoid any kind of asbestos leak, as it has the potential to grow on surfaces if it leaks.

Cleanup

Once all the asbestos-containing materials are removed from the premises, our technicians start a thorough clean-up. We use high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum cleaners to gather small particles of dust that may contain asbestos residue. We restore the premise to its original shape, except this time, it does not contain asbestos. Then, the structure’s air is sampled and tested by a certified hygienist to ensure proper decontamination and air clearance.

Follow-Up

Upon competition of the asbestos abatement process, we hand you a second written record that contains the outline of the work done on your premises. It ensures that the correct procedures and guidelines were followed during the abatement process.

What makes asbestos so dangerous is that it does not show any immediate signs on human health.
